Spring Symposium, 2012
Center for the Humanities Spring Symposium
Friday, March 30, 2012
3:30-5:00 pm
Medbury Lounge
"Humanities, Science, and Technology"
This year's symposium will feature a panel discussion about the relationship of the human, in its various conceptions and formulations, to science and technology. Theorists have contended with this problematic interface for many years, exploring its ideological, physiological, and psychological registers, among others.
Readings selected by the panelists will be made available in advance of the symposium to enable attendees to take part fully in the discussion that will follow the panelists' brief presentations. Those interested in taking part on the panel itself should contact the Center's director, Craig N. Owens, at craig.owens@drake.edu.
Book Discussion
This year's "Humanities Reads" book selection, George Saunders's In Persuasion Nation, dovetails with the symposium theme. Professors Sarah Hogan and Megan Brown of the Drake English Department will lead several discussions of the short stories included in the book during the Spring semester. Read more about it, and about Saunders's Spring 2012 visit to Drake University as part of the Writers and Critics Series, by clicking the Humanities Reads link on the left side of the page.
