J-Term & Study Abroad
Dickens in London
Professor Klimaszewski and Professor Owens
Students in this J-term travel seminar will read texts written by Charles Dickens and will visit sites in London that are pertinent to Dickens's life and writings. The writing assignments will ask students to reflect critically upon how visiting London affects their understanding of Dickens's writing as well as how reading Dickens's writings affects their response to and experience of London. We will take two trips outside of London: one to Rochester for a visit to sites significant in Great Expectations and one to the The Lake District in northern England, where we will attempt to hike a path similar to that of Dickens and Wilkie Collins in The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices. In addition to the sites listed in the brochure, we will take several walking tours of neighborhoods with Dickensian connections, and students will have the unique opportunity to celebrate the start of a new year in one of the world's most diverse and vibrant cities.
