The Department of Art and Design’s programs are located in three buildings across Drake’s campus: Harmon Fine Arts Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Studio Arts Hall. All of the classrooms and studios are well-maintained and accessible to students during the evenings and weekends.
Art History, Drawing, and Painting are located in the Harmon Fine Arts Center (FAC). Flexible classrooms support a range of teaching methods, and they are equipped with digital projection equipment and Internet access. There are two well-furnished drawing studios and a separate studio art computer lab. The lab features current software and hardware for creating digital art, including video. The painting facilities include a large, multi-use studio and individual studios for upper level painting majors. The Department of Art and Design’s administrative office is also located in FAC, as are the Anderson Gallery and the Weeks Gallery.
Graphic Design is located on the entire third floor of Carnegie Hall (CARN). Students have 24-hour access to two large advanced computer graphic labs with Internet access and current industry software and hardware. In addition, there are dedicated spaces for manual processes, including letterpress, and a large gathering space that supports discussion and critique.
Printmaking and Sculpture are located in the Studio Arts Hall (STAH). Students have 24-hour access to a spacious, well-equipped studio in which a full range of relief, intaglio, and lithographic techniques are taught. The sculpture studios support a comprehensive range of three-dimensional art making through well-equipped separate studios for woodworking, metal fabrication, casting and installation. Students have access to the sculpture studios outside of class time with a studio assistant present for instruction and guidance with equipment. STAH also provides an outdoor workspace.
